A notary public is not an attorney. A notary cannot provide legal advice, select legal documents, prepare legal documents, or advise you about the legal effect of a transaction unless separately authorized by law.
If you need help deciding which document to use, speak with an attorney or the organization that requested the paperwork. The notary can complete the notarial act that is requested when the signer and document are eligible.
This limitation protects the public. It is also why our forms ask you—or the receiving party—to identify the act or document type rather than asking the notary to choose it for you.
